Massachusetts Employers Collaborate to Meet Job Demand
Massachusetts ranks among the top three states in the country when it comes to clean energy efforts. A group of 100 state employers and stakeholders met on campus in June to raise that profile even higher – and come up with a plan for the mounting workforce needs that accompany the growth of the clean energy sector.
The first of three Massachusetts Clean Energy Industry Economic & Workforce Development Leadership Summits was held at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center. Chancellor Marty Meehan welcomed the companies and representatives from local government, trade unions and the state’s education and training community.
“The clean energy industry in Massachusetts is at an important moment in its evolution,” says Meehan. “With the right policies and collaborative actions, Massachusetts can rival health care, higher education and financial services as a job creation engine in the state.”
The next two summits in New Bedford and Springfield will involve employers and stakeholders in the central, western and southeastern regions of the state.
The summits are sponsored by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, the New England Clean Energy Council, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
With funding from the UMass President’s Office, UMass Lowell’s Center for Family, Work and Community, the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, the Toxic Use Reduction Institute and the departments of Engineering and Regional Economic and Social Development have worked together the last two years to examine workforce development needs within the clean energy industry, which led to the development of this series of meetings.
