Title: Sirius Integrator and Second Wind team up to expand capability of industry-leading wind measurement system
Industry sector: Wind
Devens, Mass. May 20, 2010 – Sirius Integrator Inc. today announced that it has partnered with Second Wind Inc. to build a power source that keeps wind measurement systems operating during extended periods of low sunlight.
Sirius Integrator and Second Wind have developed a high reliablility fuel-cell-based power solution for Triton wind measurement systems deployed in climatic conditions and locations where solar power resources alone may not be sufficient to maintain operation. This is especially important during winter’s shortest days in extreme northern and southern latitudes or regions susceptible to periods of prolonged cloud cover. The new power source, which utilizes fully proven methanol fuel cell systems, will ensure that Triton wind measurement devices can collect an uninterrupted stream of data to provide wind power project developers with the information needed to plan, finance, build and operate their wind farms.
Sirius Integrator is a leading provider of alternative energy solutions, providing off-grid, remote and emergency power products and services. Second Wind develops wind measurement systems that make wind power pay off for consumers, investors and the environment.
Sirius Integrator President and Founder John Merlino noted that in today’s global economy, there is a growing demand for non-traditional electrical power solutions. Sirius Integrator incorporates fuel cell, solar and lithium battery power technology to build integrated solutions tailored to meet their customer’s needs.
Second Wind manufactures the Triton Sonic Wind Profiler system. Wind energy companies use Triton to characterize wind conditions at wind farm locations. The portable Triton units can be deployed for more than a year in remote, off-electrical-grid locations. Triton’s wind measurement system collects data up to 200 meters and is monitored on a near real time basis. Triton’s measurements provide critical data used to determine where wind turbine performance will be most economically viable.
“By integrating fuel cell technology, the Triton Sonic Wind Profiler should run for more than two months on just 20 liters of methanol fuel without any solar charging event,” said Chris Babcock, Second Wind’s Triton product manager. “This is sufficient to maintain continuous operations through the darkest periods of the year and keep Tritons running year-round in the most challenging locations.”
