EnerNOC is awarded $10m state contract

By Erin Ailworth

The Patrick administration has given EnerNOC, a Boston energy management firm, a three-year, $10 million contract to track energy use at state-owned facilities, including Massachusetts colleges, universities, and prisons.

The contract is being paid for with stimulus money received from the US Department of Energy, and the information will be used to direct conservation efforts. Massachusetts officials chose EnerNOC from among 25 applicants partly because of the company’s “effective management approach’’ and “substantial experience,’’ according to a statement from the state about the award.

Founded in 2001, EnerNOC has made a name for itself as a so-called demand-response company that pays its customers to reduce electricity use during times of peak demand, thus lessening the chance that the regional electricity grid — our power delivery system — doesn’t get overloaded. Last year, the New England Clean Energy Council, which is trying to grow the region’s clean tech sector, honored EnerNOC as its “Breakout Company of the Year.’’

EnerNOC’s work is expected to result in 46 new jobs, and could eventually lead to more than $10 million in annual savings for Massachusetts, officials said.
