Mass. clean energy projects garner $13M in funds

Governor Deval Patrick announced on Wednesday the award of more than $13 million to 111 cities and towns in Massachusetts for the purpose of adding energy efficiency projects.

The funding comes from grants provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Of the $13 million, 97 cities and towns will land $12.2 million in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy, while 35 communities will get a piece of the $825,000 in technical consulting services. The individual grants have a cap of $150,000 that will be used for shovel-ready community projects.

The financing will be used to install solar power, add energy efficiency projects and upgrade heating systems to municipalities.

According to a press release from the state house, Massachusetts is an early adopter of EECBG awards being applied to cities and towns with populations under 35,000. The commonwealth received $42.2 million in ARRA funds from the DOE in March 2009 as part of the EECBG program.
