The Position
Responsible for coordinating and overseeing the timely and high quality analyses of feedstocks, reaction intermediates and end products in support of pilot plant campaigns. Supervises professional staff in the day-to-day laboratory operations. Other duties include: overall laboratory management, long-range planning for staff and equipment purchasing, developing and reviewing new analytical procedures, preparing, administering and monitoring laboratory budgets, and developing and implementing laboratory policies.

Responsibilities
The following represents the majority of the duties performed by the position, but are not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary.
•Take ownership/direction for the analytical technology effort
•Coordinate internal analyses of samples for pilot plant campaigns.
•Interact with technology and business development to resolve critical analysis opportunities.
•Oversee and develop work plan for analytical technicians for around the clock work during pilot plant campaigns.
•Cross-train on a wide variety of tests/instruments. Be able to train technicians on instrumentation.
•Handle multiple projects simultaneously.
•Deliver timely and high quality analyses. QA/QC of analytical lab results.
•Document results regularly in reports and maintain analytical database.
•Communicate with other departments in a timely manner.
•Responsible for the content and drafting of the analytical data
•Review and update technical procedures and Lab Standard Operating Procedures to improve efficiency in the lab.
•Research and develop new procedures and methods.
•Order supplies and chemicals for laboratory.
•Keep current with chemical advances that will impact or improve testing methods.
•Maintain laboratory computers and back-up electronic records on a timely schedule.
•Follow Good Laboratory Practices and SOPs.
•Prepares laboratory budget.
•Strong commitment to safety.

Qualifications

•Minimum of a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in Chemistry or related discipline.
•Minimum of 5 years experience in Biological, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, or Process
•Engineering/Sciences.
•Experience in wet chemical analysis and the operation of precision analytical instrumentation, e.g. organic and inorganic elemental analysis, BET surface area, porosimetry, etc. with a focus on particle size determination, CHNS (Ultimate Analysis), and TGA (Proximate Analysis).
•Experience in troubleshooting and routine maintenance of precision analytical equipment.
•Familiarity with ASTM testing methodology.
•Intermediate level proficiency with laboratory information management software (LIMS), instrumentation software and Microsoft Excel/Access.
•In addition to the required qualifications the successful candidate is likely to be able to demonstrate:
•Experience with innovation around technology, particular testing procedures, or instrumentation.
•Experience in the characterization of coal, petroleum coke, biomass, or synthetic fuels.
