Boston Power Boosts VC Round

Boston-Power Inc., a Westborough, Mass.-based developer of lithium-ion batteries, has expanded its Series E round from $60 million to $66.4 million, according to a regulatory filing.

The company previously announced that Foundation Asset Management and Oak Investment Partners co-led the round, and were joined by fellow return backers Venrock and Gabriel Venture Partners. The company has now raised around $191 million in total VC funding since 2005.

Lithium-ion battery maker Boston-Power Inc. announced today it plans to build a 455,000-square-foot building in Auburn that will employ 600 workers, according to company officials.

The new facility will be a manufacturing plant for the Westborough-based company's lithium-ion technology for plug-in hybrid and electric battery vehicles. Boston Power landed a big agreement with Hewlett Packard to produce batteries for their laptops.
